What I Read This Weekend…How We Deal With Gravity by Ginger Scott

Screen Shot 2014-11-16 at 5.55.55 PMHow We Deal with Gravity by Ginger Scott

Not going to lie. I wasn’t super excited about this book. I have liked previous works by this author though so I figured I would try it out. I am so glad that I did. I enjoyed this book immensely. The writing was well done. The pace was great. The focus on autism was done wonderfully. I feel like I have such a better understanding of autism after reading this book. The blend of romance with the struggles of a single mother of a child with autism was beautiful. That was probably my favorite part of the book. Max was my favorite character by far. He seemed like a great kid.

There was a lot of character growth for both the main characters. I feel like both had to adapt to unexpected things. These things were not something they wanted to adapt to, but knew they had to for their love to survive. I thought that was great about this book as well. It’s hard for people to change and I think both characters did a lot of that throughout the story.

I now want to find my own ‘Dusty’s’, with my own ‘Ray’ to go hangout at on Saturday nights. I thought the title was perfect for this book after reading it. In the beginning I didn’t get it, but you have to read it to get it, which is ok to do sometimes. I really hope that there is a follow-up book about Claire and Cole. I felt there could be a really cute story there.

It definitely took a bit to get into which is the only reason for a 4/5 and not a 5/5. This is a book that I think was almost necessary for you not to get into it right away. I don’t think the rest of the story could have been as well written as it was if the beginning had been written differently. Readers need that gradual introduction.

This was definitely a book that got better the further along it went and when I finished it I found I had a wonderful time reading it.

4/5 stars

What I Read This Weekend…RUSHED by Gina Robinson

Rushed by Gina RobinsonRushed by Gina Robinson Review

This book is a great insight into how the Greek system at college campuses works. I was most impressed with the descriptions about rush than anything. Mainly because I have read books lately about rush and they are incorrect in my opinion on how rush actually works and I have seen rush at small and large universities. So great job there.

The pace of the story was decent. When it started it was a little slow for me, but part of that came from the fact that I knew she would get in the house so it was almost like wasted time to talk about the process and everything leading up to it, but I understood why it was there. For the most part I liked the main character. It was a little frustrating that she didn’t seem to get the her friend Em was not actually her friend. At times it seemed liked she was and others it didn’t. That friendship just seemed really complicated and I didn’t like it. I also would have liked her to have an actual friend somewhere. It didn’t seem like she had a good secondary character to turn to when things got complicated. Also her mother confused me at times. There was her continually demand that she be in the house, but then she talks about how her mother wasn’t popular or it wasn’t a popular house when her mother was there. Her mom was such a snob about everything and it was hard to imagine how she got to acting like that in the first place if the sorority wasn’t the best when she was there. Some of the relationships were just not very clear.

The couple also seemed to fall in love rather quickly. When they said ‘I love you’, it just threw me off. I thought I had missed something. It was like I blinked and there we were and I wasn’t sure how we got to this point.

I had a hard time believing that our main guys parents would be that horrible. Mainly in cutting him off. I just really don’t understand how if your parents would hate you enough to cut you off in terms of paying for school. Even if they hate you, but they can pay for school, they will probably pay for school. Also once they got caught there was a quick turnaround, literally the next page of a bunch of other stuff going down. That again was like I blinked, and there we were. Wasn’t sure how we jumped that quickly but we did.

Both the characters seemed to grow, him more than her. However I did like that they grew at least a little. I didn’t think we got enough background on our girl. It was almost like the start of rush was the start of her life. I mean she talked about her family, but that was just her parents.

Also, by the end there were a lot of loose ends so I assuming there is going to be a second book. Too much was left unanswered for there not to be like what happened to Jordan, what’s going on with Kayla and the geeky guy, and etc.

This may make it seem like I didn’t like the book, but I did.

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEKEND…UNBORN BY AMBER LYNN NATUSCH

Screen Shot 2014-11-16 at 4.13.44 PMUnborn Review

I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in return for an honest review!

I have never read a book by Amber Lynn Natusch, but after reading this one I want to go read everything!

I really enjoyed this book. The beginning was slightly confusing. I know this can be read as a standalone, but I think it would have helped to have read the Caged series before this one. While you eventually do understand everything going on, it did take me a bit to get it all figured out. I really liked the pace of the story. The way the main character speaks is a little annoying because its a mix between language of today and language of the early 20th contrary or earlier. However, I understand why it happened that way and it does make sense when you take in the characters background.

The writing and pace of the story was good. I love paranormal stories, but especially those with gods and/or angels involved. That being said this book had a lot of paranormal elements that I liked. The pace was good which is always important to me. Overall there seemed to be very little character development but because this appears to be being turned into a series I hope to see that growth more in the next few books.

I was really surprised that our main character couldn’t fight. I thought that she would at least have been taught to do that, but nope. Also, its a little confusing in terms of her sexuality. From what I gathered while reading the book she seems to have been raped several times, but we don’t talk about that as effecting her at all. I understood that she had to survive in the Underworld and therefore felt nothing it seems like, but I wanted more depth to this character because of her harsh upbringing.

Oz seemed complicated. I am not sure where the author will take this character in future books, but there is a lot of character growth that can be done there. In terms of all the brothers. It was nice to get insight into all of them. They were each very individual despite being brothers. I was worried they would seem too similar or confusing, but the author did a good job of making each brother distinct.

I am very anxious to see where this series goes, but I did love this book and look forward to the sequel!

What I Read This Weekend…Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh

Rock Addiction by Nalini Singh Review

Screen Shot 2014-10-18 at 12.42.08 AMOne thing to keep in mind when you start this book is that it is pretty unrealistic. The guy pretty much loves her from the very beginning so you have to accept that fact to really enjoy the book. I really loved this book. I have rad many Nalini Singh books recently. I love her Psy-Changling series. This book is similar quality, but it is different. It’s a contemporary romance and is almost like a New Adult. If you don’t like either one of those options then you shouldn’t read it. If you like this author and this genre then you should read this book. I thought it was excellent. She didn’t take the easy way out and make everything about misunderstandings between the couple. The couple actually talked about their issues and actually communicated which I loved. I thought they had a mature relationship. It was different from other books in that way.

Our girl was a librarian and matched every stereotype of that description. She was a little boring, confusing, but she was ok overall. She wasn’t too irritating. I really liked her relationships with other people more than anything. Not only with her man, but also her friends and his bandmates/friends.

One good thing about this book is like others by this author she talks about things that are the focus in her other books in the series. So what that means is htat you want those other books at the same time as you are reading the current one. This is very annoying when the other books are not out.

Our man is slightly ridiculous with the strength of his feelings right off the bat. It probably will bother some people, but it didn’t bug me too much. In this authors other books, there are ‘mates’, ‘soul mates’ and etc. Therefore I expected this even if it is more new adult and contemporary with no paranormal. This author has a good flow to her writing and character development is great.

Really loved it! 4/5 stars!

Can be read as a standalone, but will have a series focused on other characters in this universe.

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was so good and it ended on a cliffhanger, which really sucked. I want the next book ASAP. I have read books by Pricilla West before and always like her books.

At the beginning I wasn’t so sure if I would like it. Gradually as the story progressed I liked the story and the characters more and more. The side characters were good. I’m wondering if any of the other characters will have their own stories. For now though I am waiting to see what happens with the couple we have.

I really liked our girl. She seemed very smart and wasn’t afraid to stand up for herself against our hero when he needed it. Speaking of the hero…HOT! Don’t think any other words are necessary.

The tour bus was CRAZY! I had such a hard time imagining what it looked like because it seemed so insane. I have never seen a three story bus. I’m not convinced that’s an actual thing. I liked that our girl was an accountant and responsible for the band’s budget. It seemed like a very legit job.

I have read many rock star books and this one was excellent.

This book is what high school romantic comedies are made of. Popular guy from high school falls for geeky girl from same high school after each attend the same college. Overall I don’t know why I didn’t like this book more. I liked aspects of the story, but not really the characters. I think I just wanted more from the characters. Both the guy and girl were nothing special for me. I just didn’t connect with them like I usually do with the couple in a book.

My rating has more to do with the characters than the story. Story I liked, characters not so much. Still a good story and I wouldn’t have been mad if I had paid for it. Just another typically NA book in a growing pile in my Kindle of NA books.

b7196-katamedbookcover6x9Also here is my review for Tamed out next Tuesday!

Now I have read other books by K.A. Robinson and liked them. I had not read a Torn series book and was nervous because this is technically the fifth one in that series. This one can be read as a standalone though.

K.A. Robinson did a really good job though explaining the other stories in a way that you don’t feel like you are missing anything with this one, but you still want to read them.

This story really takes place throughout the other stories and I am guessing if you read the others first you have been waiting for this story for a while.

Our main character Amber I liked. She was spunky. She isn’t the good girl. Adam was fun. I’m not sure I wouldn’t like the other guys better, but Adam was fine. He is very much the bad boy. He had a really interesting look which was different and I liked that.

The flow of the story is a little choppy, but I know that’s because it takes place over a very long time. The book also wrapped up a little bit too nicely and quickly for me. I thought there would be more fight left at the end, but their wasn’t. I think I just didn’t like that it wrapped up too nicely.

K.A. Robinson’s writing though was great as usual. The dialogue was very entertaining and I laughed at the banter between Amber and Adam several times.

Good weekend read! 4/5 stars.

What I Read This Weekend…Her Best Shot by Shannyn Schroeder

Her Best Shot by Shannyn Schroeder Review

I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

This is the first book in a series serial. Each book is a serial/novella, but deals with one of three friends around spring break before they all graduate. All the girls are really smart. I believe they all attend MIT. I believe each can be read as a standalone.

I kinda liked this book. Because it was a novella, it was shorter so everything was more rushed, which I was ok with. The pool aspect was really interesting. I don’t think I have ever read a book dealing with pool. I have to say that I wanted a pool (wink, wink) scene. Unfortunately there was not.

The main character was a little annoying. She was going to make a decision near the end that in my opinion would have been stupid, thankfully the guy convinced her of that and she didn’t do it. Still I didn’t think she should have held a grudge against him for it because it was such a stupid decision.

The girl wasn’t my favorite, but I did like that she was a really intelligent.

The guy was also not my favorite overall, but I liked the idea of him. He is part of a gypsy family and I thought that part was very different. He is also a nomad, which again was different.

Part of the problem I think is that since the story was so short, you don’t get to really connect to the characters. There were also no side, secondary characters. It really was just about the two of them. I think I could have done better with that if it had been done better.

It was fine for a quick read, but didn’t hold my interest like other novellas that I have read.

What To Read This Weekend…Gage by Tess Oliver

Gage by Tess Oliver

I was so excitedScreen Shot 2014-10-15 at 11.26.53 AM to read this book. I really liked Gage while I was reading the first ‘book’ in the Barringer Brother series, which was actually a serial. I loved that he was basically like a hot lumberjack. That was just different for a character to what I usually read. The cameos by Jericho and our other Barringer brother, Seth, were fun. I am still really curious to see what Tess does with Jericho because at this point she must do something with him! He needs a good woman!

The heroine in this I liked more than I thought I would. Reading the blurb I wasn’t convinced I would like her, but I did. There was still something blocking me from connecting with her completely and still not sure what that was, but I did like her. I was surprised at the backstory with her. I didn’t see it coming and again it was a different type of character in that way which was great. I did hate that she enabled her mom as much as she did. Her mom demands things and she gives them to her without a fight. I wanted her to tell her to shove it sooner and especially not give up part of her inheritance. That really bothered me.

I liked how everything worked out in the end and am excited to see what happens next in the Barringer Brother world. Can’t wait to see the next book!
