“Romance, intrigue and danger! It’s an exciting adventure as the reader joins Catalina on her perilous journey through the underbelly of Mexico’s dark side.” – Patricia Highton

“A delightful blend of drama, romance, and self-discovery.” – Tiffany Matus

Excerpt:

“A penny for your thoughts?” Catalina regretted asking almost as soon as the words were out. The less she knew about him, the better. Right?

Continuing to lean against the side, Matthew gave her a once-over.

He decided to have a little fun with her.

“Only a penny? Is that what people are charging nowadays? Not me. My thoughts are worth a whole nickel.” The laughter in his tone danced in his playful eyes, their brilliance shining like blue gems. A slow, infectious grin spread across Matthew’s face. He looked like a mischievous little boy who was trying to buy his way out of trouble after being caught with his hand in the cookie jar.

Catalina bit her lip in a desperate attempt to remain serious, but it was of little use.

Charmed by her softened features, Matthew took a slow step towards her. He raised a tentative hand and pushed back a curl that had worked its way loose.

Catalina’s breath stilled as the light touch of his fingers slowly trailed along her cheek. Her beautiful eyes and full mouth were almost irresistible, and he wondered if she tasted as sweet as she looked.

Unasked questions blazed from his eyes, making the cage that she was trying to construct around her heart unhinge. The sudden attraction hit her hard. She forced herself to look away and break the spell. Falling for her escort was not part of the plan.

“Look!” Catalina pointed towards the bank. “We’re just about there.”

“Then I guess we best get back to the car.” Disappointment laced his words. She didn’t have any romantic notions about him, so he best leave it at just friends.

No more goo-goo eyes.

“It shouldn’t take too long to get it started.” He picked up the conversation again as he paced back to the car with a determined step. “It’s warm out. So she doesn’t need to be cranked or anything.”

Catalina questioned his sudden change in mood. She was grateful at the flow of normal conversation between them. Still, it felt like something was suddenly missing. “Well, I suppose that’s a good thing.” She plodded along behind him, dissatisfied when they reached the Model T.

He took her hand and helped her up and into the front seat. “Shouldn’t I ride in the—”

“You’ll get a better view of things while we’re driving from up here.” He cut her off, patting the hood of the car for emphasis – a friendly grin that promised an exciting ride. After all, it was a long trip to Nogales. “Besides, it’ll be more fun.”

More fun? Hmmm…more trouble maybe. Definitely more dangerous.

What I Read This Weekend…The Prince Who Loved Me by Karen Hawkins

The Prince who loved me

Synopsis: A handsome, rakish prince who doesn’t believe in true love meets a stubborn lass who will settle for nothing less…

In a lighthearted retelling of a classic fairy tale, bestselling author Karen Hawkins gives Cinderella a Scottish twist!

Prince Alexsey Romanovin enjoys his carefree life, flirting—and more—with every lovely lady who crosses his path. But when the interfering Grand Duchess Natasha decides it’s time for her grandson to wed, Alexsey finds himself in Scotland, determined to foil her plans. Brainy, bookish, and bespectacled, Bronwyn Murdoch seems the perfect answer—she isn’t at all to the duchess’ taste.

Living at the beck and call of her ambitious stepmother and social butterfly stepsisters, Bronwyn has little time for a handsome flirt—no matter how intoxicating his kisses are. After all, no spoiled, arrogant prince would be seriously interested in a firm-minded female like herself. So . . . wouldn’t it be fun to turn his “game” upside down and prove that an ordinary woman can bring a prince to his knees?

Review:

I have read a couple of Karen Hawkins and so I knew it was going to be excellent and she didn’t disappoint! This book was adorable and very loosely based on Cinderella. I love fairy tales so I was excited to see how Cinderella would tie into the story. Karen Hawkins did an excellent job using little pieces that you recognize as part of the Cinderella story, but then the rest of it was all original story-telling.

Bronwyn, the heroine, was very cute. She liked to read, wore glasses and was considered ‘on the shelf’, which is always the kiss of death, but also means some wonderful man will come and take them off that shelf! Alexsey was one of the more realistic princes that I have read. Every once in a while you see a prince story and they always seem annoyingly unrealistic. Alexsey was the best prince I have read about. I loved that there was a romance between some secondary characters, that is always fun. The romance between Alexsey and Bronwyn was also a more realistic relationship. Why Alexsey is attracted to her in the first place was also refreshing. The pace was write on point. Character development was excellent. Overall it was just a really great story and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

5/5 stars!

What To Read This Weekend…Earls Just Want to Have Fun by Shana Galen

Synopsis

His heart may be the last thing she ever steals . . .

Marlowe is a pickpocket, a housebreaker—and a better actress than any professional on the stage. She runs with the Covent Garden Cubs, a gang of thieves living in the slums of London’s Seven Dials. It’s a fierce life, and Marlowe has a hard outer shell. But when she’s alone, she allows herself to think of a time before—a dimly remembered life when she was called Elizabeth.

Maxwell, Lord Dane, is intrigued when his brother, a hired investigator, ropes him into his investigation of the fiercely beautiful hellion. He teaches her to navigate the social morass of the town while his brother attempts to confirm her true identity. But Marlowe will not escape so easily. Instead, Dane is drawn into her world of danger and violence, where the student becomes the teacher and love is the greatest risk of all.

Review

I absolutely adored this book. I can’t say enough good things! I haven’t read a Regency romance in forever and randomly decided to read this one. By the end it reminded me why I love Regency romances.

Marlowe/Elizabeth was wonderful. I loved her spunk and that she didn’t put up with Dane’s pompousness (not sure that’s a word, but it fits). She cared so much for everyone and was overall just a fun and lovely heroine. Lord Dane was a great hero. He was more proper and lordy that the usual hero’s for historical romance, but I liked it. Sometimes I hate when authors do that, but as usual Shana Galen did a wonderful job not only writing Dane that way, but fitting the story together. There is a undertone of danger in parts of the novel. It had just enough to keep everything intriguing. Plus I love undertones of danger in historical fiction! There wasn’t a lot of it, but just the right amount.

The secondary characters of Dane’s brother and Marlowe’s good friend were both very interesting. I liked the focus on them and I hope that those two come up in the future.

I have never been disappointed by Shana Galen and this novel was no exception!

Review

While I was reading this book I wasn’t entirely sure that I would enjoy it. After I finished it I thought about it, and did decided that I liked it. It wasn’t my favorite, but I enjoyed it. This book wasn’t one that I read in one sitting or finished quickly. However sometimes that is nice just because you know you don’t have time to keep reading, but you do anyways. I had other things to do so this allowed me to enjoy reading when I could, but I also got other things done while reading. That is rare for me. I probably needed it.

All of that being said, Lord of Regrets wasn’t a bad story. I liked the premise, but the heroine was also extremely annoying.

The whole premise for their ‘love’ is based on five years prior. You don’t see them fall in love then though. That is what is lacking, but also could be seen as a benefit. I personally like reading about people falling in love. That’s why people read romances. However, this novel really showed what happens after you fall in love. How decisions based on that love can effect you as a person and your life. Now it doesn’t have a HEA, but the characters do get to a point where you know they will be ok. That I think is the most we can ask from our characters sometimes since HEA doesn’t exist in real life. This novel is based more in reality that I am used to from novels so it was interesting.

I was disappointed by a couple things. The daughter wasn’t a major focus on the novel. She would pop-up and had her moments, but from other books I read she wasn’t a big part of the story. Also the heroine was very annoying at times. She just went through most of the novel, seeing what was going on, but rarely having an opinion about anything. She was just very confused for 80% of the novel, feeling hatred for 10% and then happy/content the other 10%. I just hated the lack of opinion or how she seemed to keep wanting to ‘think’ about things. I understand that part of that was the more real-life aspects of the novel, but it got a little irritating at times.
Those were my two main complaints. I liked our hero, he seemed like a good guy. The novel was well-written, but it helps to expect some things that I mentioned before instead of going into this novel like I usually do, especially Regency-era novels.

About Author

I’m addicted to writing. I’ve written 26 romance novels in 25 years, but I just started releasing them in May 2014 because frankly there are some things inside them I wasn’t sure I wanted my daughters to read. The nest is empty, my girls all grown, so now I’m letting loose.

I believe in the adage; Don’t judge a book by it’s cover! Definitely the case with The Girl on the Half Shell. Perfect looking lives are not perfect. We all have our own challenges to overcome! It’s a theme in the books I’ve written and I cover a wide range of contemporary issues in stories ranging from raw and steamy, to gut wrenching, to happy happily ever after.

My first release The Girl on the Half Shell is my most intense novel, the first in the Half Shell Series and the one I had to wait until I had no kids at home to release.

My Perfect Forever Series is definitely happy happily ever after! The first in this line of books was released June 2014 with The Signature.

My soon to be released first novella of the Encounters books, are short, steamy, and fun reads.

And in September I’m starting to release my first in The Deverell Series with When the Perfect Comes, a fast paced, plot twisting historical!

I’ve been in love with the Romance novel since I read my first Kathleen Woodiwiss book, and it seems to me that beyond a steamy fun read, a good romance novel is so much more: it’s women empowering women. We share. We learn.

So about me? I’m as eclectic as my books. A mom. A business owner. A writer of romance. An advocate for clean air and the environment. A wife and an animal lover. The best way to explain me is that once in a talent contest I played classical piano followed by a chopsticks duet with my toes. That pretty much sums up how I’ve lived my life!

WHAT TO READ THIS WEEKEND…THE SECRETS OF A SCOUNDREL BY GAELEN FOLEY

The Secrets of a Scoundrel by Gaelen Foley

The Secrets of a Scoundrel by Gaelen Foley

The Secrets of a Scoundrel by Gaelen Foley

This was the final book in the Inferno Club series. I have to say it was probably one of my favorites in the entire series. I still like Foley’s Knight Family series better, but this book was really good. The last few in this series haven’t been my favorite so this one made up for it. I thought it was really cute. I really wish there had been more of an epilogue. I also really did want all of them to be together at some point fighting evil. Alas, it was not meant to be. I will just have to imagine how awesome that would be all on my own.

Now our heroine has some moments where I knew she was going to be in over her head and need rescuing, which she did. Our hero also seemed to have everything well in hand most of the book.

There was one brilliant scene where our hero trades guns for something and I loved it! You will have to read to find out, but for those that do, that scene…you know which one I am talking about, I loved!

I like to keep my reviews short so if you have read the Inferno Club series at all, check out how it all ends. This was one of my favorites in the series!

4/5 stars.
