Jamie had amazed herself at her reaction when she saw Kevin. It was like she was watching herself on a TV screen with no controls. I must be drunk on this fresh air. Pleasantly surprised at Kevin’s rugged good looks, she tried to deny the raw sensual tremors he set off and helped him unpack the truck. He was tall and muscular with sand-colored hair, deep blue, kind eyes, and a small cleft in his chin. Don’t even think about it. The last thing I need is to get involved again.

“We need to pick a spot and set up our tents,” he informed her as they trekked toward camp. Many of the choice areas were already taken so Kevin continued to search for patches of level ground for the tents. Common areas with picnic tables, fire pits, and tents were scattered everywhere. They hiked a little farther, toward the outskirts of the tent city.

He put the gear down and explained how he needed to closely scrutinize the ground for rocks, large sticks, and other natural decorations that could cause the body sore spots by morning.

“The tents aren’t big so they don’t need much ground area. This looks good.”

As he pulled one tent out of its pack sack, Jamie instinctively began to help, but her inexperience was obvious.

“I don’t know what to do, but I’m teachable.”

Kevin laughed. “Here, let me show you. It’s pretty simple. Even a city girl can do it.”

“Who? Me? What makes you think I’m a city girl?” Wide-eyed, she pointed to herself.

“Maybe the fact that you’ve lived in New York City all your life?”

“You’ve got a point there. But like I said, I’m teachable.” They bantered back and forth as they erected the first tent. “Okay.” Kevin stood back and admired their success.

“One down. This’ll be yours. Now I’ve got to find a spot for mine.” Eyes focused, surveying the ground, he walked away from her tent.

“Where are you going? Where’s your tent going to be?” The concern was obvious in her voice and he turned to look at her.

“I don’t know. What’s wrong?” His eyes searched hers.

“Like you said, I’m a city girl and I’m not used to sleeping out in the woods. How far away are you going to be?”

He laughed. “With all these tents, you don’t have to worry about animals if that’s your concern.” His face softened as he asked, “Would it make you feel better if I stayed close by?”

Relief flooded through her. “Yes.”

And with that, Kevin chuckled and pitched his tent nearby. They made a return trip to the truck for the remainder of the gear. As they unloaded their bags at the tents, Ben and Tommy came walking up.

“Hey, dinner’s ready. You guys going to eat?” Ben asked.

What I Read This Weekend…Jax by Kelly Gendron

Screen Shot 2015-06-28 at 8.29.00 PM

Description: “Some boys can get rough, some don’t always listen when you tell them to stop, and some boys, they’re just monsters. You gotta be careful who you play with…” ~ Jax Declan

I’m a tease, always have been. In my teens, Jax Declan tried to warn me about staying away from the bad boys. The only boy I ever wanted was Jax. But, no matter how much I tried to play with him, he rejected me.

I haven’t seen Jax Declan in years. A couple friends and I are going back to the Bayou for the summer. A little older now, and a bit wiser, I’ve decided that I’m going to find my teenage crush and I’m going to break him. This summer Jax Declan will play with me.

But the closer I get and the more I learn about the reserved, discreet, and sexy Jax Declan. Well, I’m starting to think that Jax Declan might just be one of those bad boys he tried to warn me about all those years ago.

Review: I did like this book. It is a really good short read if that is what you are looking for. I feel like I should have liked this book more than I did. I thought this book was a little too short. It should have been longer. The story was good, but could have been expanded upon. That was part of the 3 star rating. Also I just didn’t like it very much. I should have! It had all the elements that I usually like. It just didn’t flow very well. The brothers were ok. Not totally sure if the next one will be good. The story was well set up, but not sure if it will work. Mainly because this one didn’t as well. Certain scenes were a little predictable and boring. Just not what I expected. I liked it, but just wasn’t my favorite.

What I Read This Weekend…Opening Up by Lauren Dane

DescriptionNew York Times and USA Today bestselling author Lauren Dane delivers Book #1 in her Ink & Chrome erotic romance series.

The men of the Twisted Steel custom motorcycle shop are great with their hands… and they’re not afraid to get dirty.

PJ is exactly the kind of woman Twisted Steel owner Asa Barrons doesn’t need. The last thing he wants to do is mix business with pleasure, and PJ has some of the best custom detailing he’s ever seen. But the chemistry between them won’t be denied, and soon he’s introducing her to a whole new world in the bedroom, pushing her far beyond anything she’s ever experienced. PJ finds she can’t get enough, but how far is too far before he consumes her completely?

Review: The men of Twisted Steel are H.O.T., hot! P.J. and Asa were adorable. I really liked P.J. She was different. She was really strong and I liked that she was actually a tough girl and I loved her job! It was all so cool. Again with a more unique storyline. I didn’t feel like I had read this before which doesn’t happen all that often anymore. I really liked the family aspect of this book. That doesn’t happen that often where the family is as involved in the story and I really liked it. This was a really hot story. I hadn’t read a book by Lauren Dane before and liked her story style and her writing style. Definitely an author to keep an eye on.

What I Read This Weekend…The Prince Who Loved Me by Karen Hawkins

The Prince who loved me

Synopsis: A handsome, rakish prince who doesn’t believe in true love meets a stubborn lass who will settle for nothing less…

In a lighthearted retelling of a classic fairy tale, bestselling author Karen Hawkins gives Cinderella a Scottish twist!

Prince Alexsey Romanovin enjoys his carefree life, flirting—and more—with every lovely lady who crosses his path. But when the interfering Grand Duchess Natasha decides it’s time for her grandson to wed, Alexsey finds himself in Scotland, determined to foil her plans. Brainy, bookish, and bespectacled, Bronwyn Murdoch seems the perfect answer—she isn’t at all to the duchess’ taste.

Living at the beck and call of her ambitious stepmother and social butterfly stepsisters, Bronwyn has little time for a handsome flirt—no matter how intoxicating his kisses are. After all, no spoiled, arrogant prince would be seriously interested in a firm-minded female like herself. So . . . wouldn’t it be fun to turn his “game” upside down and prove that an ordinary woman can bring a prince to his knees?

Review:

I have read a couple of Karen Hawkins and so I knew it was going to be excellent and she didn’t disappoint! This book was adorable and very loosely based on Cinderella. I love fairy tales so I was excited to see how Cinderella would tie into the story. Karen Hawkins did an excellent job using little pieces that you recognize as part of the Cinderella story, but then the rest of it was all original story-telling.

Bronwyn, the heroine, was very cute. She liked to read, wore glasses and was considered ‘on the shelf’, which is always the kiss of death, but also means some wonderful man will come and take them off that shelf! Alexsey was one of the more realistic princes that I have read. Every once in a while you see a prince story and they always seem annoyingly unrealistic. Alexsey was the best prince I have read about. I loved that there was a romance between some secondary characters, that is always fun. The romance between Alexsey and Bronwyn was also a more realistic relationship. Why Alexsey is attracted to her in the first place was also refreshing. The pace was write on point. Character development was excellent. Overall it was just a really great story and I can’t wait to read the rest of the books in the series.

Marked As His by Em Petrova Review + Giveaway

Title: Marked as His
Series: Club Ties #3
Author: Em Petrova
 Release Date: May 7, 2015

Synopsis

Bring home the girl, get the glory. He never thought being tied to the club would land him in cuffs. Retrieving the wildcat daughter of a fellow club member lands Paxton cuffed, naked, to her bed—which he is totally okay with.
Resident tattoo artist for the Hell’s Sons, Paxton inks badass bikers, but he wants to climb the ranks within the motorcycle club. When he asks the president for a task to prove his value to the club beyond his artistic abilities, he is given an assignment—bring back the uncontrollable wildcat Santana DeSoya, the estranged daughter of a club brother.Since the day her father walked out on her mother during a desperate family crisis, Santana hasn’t seen him and good riddance. Then a brawny, tattooed god walks up to her, and commands her to get on his Harley and return to her father’s motorcycle club with him. She has no choice but to take matters into her own hands—or handcuffs, that is.With the tables turned and Paxton tied up—literally—he’s convinced his bid for club recognition is lost. While he calls to Santana’s vulnerable side and things heat up between them, putting her trust in a biker is almost as hard as returning to the club that nearly destroyed her family. Can Santana and her father settle their differences, especially when she rumbles back into his life on the back of Paxton’s bike, sporting his ink?

 Review

This book is short. And all takes place within 24 hours. That was a little annoying. I really wanted it to be longer. Paxton was hot, but it was really hard to get deep into the characters because of how short it was. This was definitely an erotic book. There were a lot of scenes. Also Santana is irritating. She goes back and forth on whether or not she wants to go to the clubhouse. Finally when she decides to go to the clubhouse she then goes running, in the wilderness this time. I would have gotten over this in time if the book had been longer. Overall it was short and predictable and not my favorite. I usually love MC books, but this one didn’t really do it for me. Don’t get me wrong. The writing was good and flow was fine, just way to short, but if that is your thing then you will love it.  3/5 stars.

What To Read This Weekend…Earls Just Want to Have Fun by Shana Galen

Synopsis

His heart may be the last thing she ever steals . . .

Marlowe is a pickpocket, a housebreaker—and a better actress than any professional on the stage. She runs with the Covent Garden Cubs, a gang of thieves living in the slums of London’s Seven Dials. It’s a fierce life, and Marlowe has a hard outer shell. But when she’s alone, she allows herself to think of a time before—a dimly remembered life when she was called Elizabeth.

Maxwell, Lord Dane, is intrigued when his brother, a hired investigator, ropes him into his investigation of the fiercely beautiful hellion. He teaches her to navigate the social morass of the town while his brother attempts to confirm her true identity. But Marlowe will not escape so easily. Instead, Dane is drawn into her world of danger and violence, where the student becomes the teacher and love is the greatest risk of all.

Review

I absolutely adored this book. I can’t say enough good things! I haven’t read a Regency romance in forever and randomly decided to read this one. By the end it reminded me why I love Regency romances.

Marlowe/Elizabeth was wonderful. I loved her spunk and that she didn’t put up with Dane’s pompousness (not sure that’s a word, but it fits). She cared so much for everyone and was overall just a fun and lovely heroine. Lord Dane was a great hero. He was more proper and lordy that the usual hero’s for historical romance, but I liked it. Sometimes I hate when authors do that, but as usual Shana Galen did a wonderful job not only writing Dane that way, but fitting the story together. There is a undertone of danger in parts of the novel. It had just enough to keep everything intriguing. Plus I love undertones of danger in historical fiction! There wasn’t a lot of it, but just the right amount.

The secondary characters of Dane’s brother and Marlowe’s good friend were both very interesting. I liked the focus on them and I hope that those two come up in the future.

I have never been disappointed by Shana Galen and this novel was no exception!

Excerpt

I jumped up on the counter and he
moved to stand in front of me, bracing his hands beside my hips. I kicked my
legs against the cabinets like a little kid as he stared down at me intensely.
I wasn’t sure what he was looking for in my eyes, but he must have found it,
because he cupped my cheek and leaned in.

“This feels like when we were
younger,” he whispered. “Like no time at all has passed.” His words echoed my
previous thoughts.
I closed my eyes, feeling his
breath fan across my lips.
God, I’d missed him.
It didn’t seem possible to miss
someone I’d grown to hate, but I did.
I was pretty sure that when
someone like Mathias came into your life they were impossible to forget.
He was like the sun, burning so
bright that even once he was gone I was still blinded.
“Did you ever miss me?” I asked.
“Even once?” I held my breath, waiting for him to explode—because that was
Mathias. He could be nice one minute and an asshole the next. I wouldn’t put it
past him to kick me out for my question.
Instead he surprised me by leaning in impossibly
closer and nuzzling my neck. “Always.”
